Hoe does ethnocentricity cause conflict?

March 22, 2011

Hoe does ethnocentricity cause conflict?

Ethnocentricity causes conflict because one lets their own culture influence their judgements on other people instead of accepting and embracing cultural differences. In the movie the First Australians, the British people accused the Aboriginals of being savage and barbaric, because they didn't wear clothes. The British let their own cultural difference lead them to a conclusion of the Aboriginals being untamed. The Aboriginals in this movie were less ethnocentric because it is part of their cultural values to accept other people regardless of their differences. As a race, the Aboriginals are more open with each other and close to one another. This caused them to think that the British were strange because they were not as open as they were. In western culture, it is a common practice to explore and take over others' land. When the British came and colonized australia, the Aboriginals were speechless because they already had their own set of functioning borders and the British completely disregarded them. Both parties evaluated one another through they eyes of their culture, which resulted in conflict. The British felt they were superior to the first Australians and proceeded to take by force. In the Rabbits, the British took over the Aboriginals land, destroying it ruining it. The Aboriginals fought back to keep their land, but the British had the advantage of advanced warfare and wiped out most of the Aboriginals. This horrible conflict could have been stopped if each culture was more welcoming to the other and treated their differences with respect. Also, the conflict could have been avoided by the Aboriginals and British talking about their differences and their problems. If that had taken place, the cultural dispute might have been settled in a less disastrous way.

Julius Caesar Duet.

Julius Caesar Play
Act two scene two Lines 58-105.

In this scene Decius and Caesar are speaking about Calpurnia's dream.

This scene is signifigant because it characterizes Caesar, and how his home- life is different, and similar to his public life. This also sets a mood for the rest of the scenes leading up to his death. It plays an important part on how the audience feels towards Caesar too. In this scene, you realize how gullible Caesar is, and almost feel sad for him. This is significant because the next few scenes make you feel like "why was I feeling SORRY for Caesar? He is full of hubris!"

DECIUS BRUTUS

Caesar, all hail! good morrow, worthy Caesar:
I come to fetch you to the senate-house.

CAESAR

And you are come in very happy time,
To bear my greeting to the senators
And tell them that I will not come to-day:
Cannot, is false, and that I dare not, falser:
I will not come to-day: tell them so, Decius.

CALPURNIA

Say he is sick.

CAESAR

Shall Caesar send a lie?
Have I in conquest stretch'd mine arm so far,
To be afraid to tell graybeards the truth?
Decius, go tell them Caesar will not come.

DECIUS BRUTUS

Most mighty Caesar, let me know some cause,
Lest I be laugh'd at when I tell them so.

CAESAR

The cause is in my will: I will not come;
That is enough to satisfy the senate.
But for your private satisfaction,
Because I love you, I will let you know:
Calpurnia here, my wife, stays me at home:
She dreamt to-night she saw my statua,
Which, like a fountain with an hundred spouts,
Did run pure blood: and many lusty Romans
Came smiling, and did bathe their hands in it:
And these does she apply for warnings, and portents,
And evils imminent; and on her knee
Hath begg'd that I will stay at home to-day.

DECIUS BRUTUS

This dream is all amiss interpreted;
It was a vision fair and fortunate:
Your statue spouting blood in many pipes,
In which so many smiling Romans bathed,
Signifies that from you great Rome shall suck
Reviving blood, and that great men shall press
For tinctures, stains, relics and cognizance.
This by Calpurnia's dream is signified.

CAESAR

And this way have you well expounded it.

DECIUS BRUTUS

I have, when you have heard what I can say:
And know it now: the senate have concluded
To give this day a crown to mighty Caesar.
If you shall send them word you will not come,
Their minds may change. Besides, it were a mock
Apt to be render'd, for some one to say
'Break up the senate till another time,
When Caesar's wife shall meet with better dreams.'
If Caesar hide himself, shall they not whisper
'Lo, Caesar is afraid'?
Pardon me, Caesar; for my dear dear love
To our proceeding bids me tell you this;
And reason to my love is liable.

CAESAR

How foolish do your fears seem now, Calpurnia!
I am ashamed I did yield to them.
Give me my robe, for I will go.

Learning Profiles

I am a Gestalt learner with a J Learning Profile. I am right hemisphere dominate, meaning I like to focus on the bigger picture, and not pay attention to smaller details. The problem is that I need to focus on the details MORE and engage my left hemisphere. The LOGIC side can be engaged by making lists and prioritizing. Paying attention to smaller details will help too. I tend to learn best when the bigger picture is recognized from the beginning and I have something to work towards. I tend to remember whole concepts. I am spontaneous when relaxed, and under stress I act clumsy and cautious.
In order to become more well rounded as a learner, I need to engage my logic side more, so that I can participate even more in class. I can do this by communicating details in addition to the bigger picture. To engage BOTH sides of my brain, I can use both sides of the body, I can breath on both sides in swimming, I can practice dribbling with my left hand in basketball, or work on my left hand roles in percussion. I can also practice reading and following through instructions more. The CPR unit in health is really helping me with this because it must be followed through in a specific order, but there is also room for judgement- a perfect combination to improve my learning capability.
As a gestalt learner, I tend to not pay attention to step by step instructions unless I know where they are leading me. In order to keep myself focused during these step by steps, I may need to sit closer to the front, or in line with the board so I can stay zoned in. I would like my teachers to know that I really try hard to perform my best in everything that I do, but sometimes I just get tired of performing my hardest and get really lazy for a period of time. Then when I'm all rested up, I jump back in the game. Im not sure how my learning profile can reflect this, but I know that my grades reflect it. I think the periods of time when I grow really lazy tend to co-exist with the periods of time when I am extremely stressed out. My learning profile says that when I am stressed, I am clumsy and stuck. In that case, I think my learning profile DOES reflect my grades. I am not making any excuses for my performance habits in school, I am just simply noting two things I know, my performance habits, and my learning profile.
I learned a lot from the learning profile activity. For example, I actually make an effort to pay more attention now that I know it has something to do with my learning style, not that the material is boring. I also make an effort to engage both sides of my brain in several activities, like in basketball I am trying to dribble more with both hands, and in percussion I am practicing more with both hands as well. I am also engaging both sides of my brain. On school assignments I am taking more notice to the instructions and step by step teachings, and this is actually helping me improve my grades.
In short, I would just like to say that my learning profile has really helped my understand myself as a learner. I just hope that now that my teachers are aware of my habits, that they will have a better understanding of my performance habits.

How does Art mirror Society?

The Ambassadors

The Ambassadors was painted in 1533 by Hans Holbien the Younger. This piece of art is an oil painting painted on canvas. I believe this is a piece of Renaissance art because not only is it a double portrait, but it includes examples of still life which were both new ideas being practiced in the Renaissance time period. This piece of art reflects the Renaissance not only in the styleit was made in, but in the moment that was being captured. The Ambassadors reflect what was happening in the renaissance through the subjects and items in the painting. The people of the renaissance were driven to explore the world around them, and that is shown in the painting through the still life (objects on the table). On the table there are two globes, one being of the world around them and two mapping out the stars. There are also a variety of tools used to explore and calculate different subjects. I think these reflect what were happening in the Renaissance because the Renaissance was driven by the exploration of new knowledge and the world. The Ambassadors was painted with a knowledge of perspective, shading, and 3D. These techniques were introduced to Art during the renaissance time period. Perspective is represented in this painting through how the objects on the table are bigger in the foreground, and gradually get smaller into the background. Also, the lines of perspective on the floor tiles seem to disappear to an unknown vanishing point behind the table. Shading is used in this painting on the globes and geographical tools to give an allusion of 3d on the shape. These art techniques prove that this painting was created in the Renaissance because the techniquesthemselves were created in that time period. Both the art techniques and the subject of the painting reflect the Renaissance society, because the discovery of knew knowledge and the practice of realistic techniques were both crucial to the Renaissance time period.

Driving Forces of the Renaissance

Carpaccio's Venice

I believe this picture represents the rivalry between the city states because of how Venice is portrayed. This painting of a city state shows the people of Venice in their fancy clothes, next to their intricate architecture, and using their unique transportation. I think that Carpaccio's painting shows Venice influenced by the rivalry amongst the city states because the painting is portrayed in a busy, ever-changing vision. This vision is showing how Venice is progressing in its ideas, influenced by rivalry amongst the city states.

Because of the Competition and Rivalry amongst the city states, city states forced each other into progressing in their ideas which enabled them to discover new things, leaving us with knowledge we have today.
